Finally Ciclos/Cycles is complete, and we’ll be entering it into festivals in the next couple months. We’ll also make sure to have some screenings organized so everyone involved has a chance to see it on a bigger screen. Thanks so much for everyone who helped make this movie happen.

Roughcuts in Rio

Just finished the rough cut of Cycles (Ciclos in Portuguese). Next step is to try to get some some color correction done with my cinematographer - Julio - which should be easier now that I’m back in Rio. We also might try to get nice titles done and some sound mixing… although maybe we’ll see if we get into any festivals before that.

Just after we shot Cycles in June we got this write up in Globo’s online entertainment news. The short movie is still in Post, and I actually just got the new system needed to finish cutting. Also have someone working on a Score now, so hopefully before the month’s over it will be ready.

Back in NY now and have managed to get to almost all my favorite haunts. It was a bit nerve racking to find work after so long, but I got lucky again. Now I’m trying to balance the office, with The Gringo Times, writing, and editing Cycles… hmmm.

Cycles/Ciclos set, wrap party photos

We shot Ciclos (a translated/adapted version of Cycles) for 18 hours on Sunday, June 2nd at the Lapa Irish Pub - and it went great.

The cast and crew were all professional and fun, and we got almost all the shots we wanted from the day. We’re still editing and hope to have a rough cut by the end of the month. Here are some photos from the set and the wrap party.

We’re shooting the short movie Ciclos (Cycles) on Sunday, and I’m so excited/nervous I can barely sleep - always the same.

This one is different then my last short movies though, first off - it’s in Portuguese. We took a script I had been trying to make for a few years in NY and adapted it to take place in Rio. This meant a change in setting and dialogue, not just a straight translation.

This is also different because of the level of talented cast and crew we’ve pulled together. Juliana Boller, Fernando Dolabella, and Fernanda Neder are all accomplished actors and we’re lucky to have them. Co-Producer and Assistant Director, Luiza Moscoso has brought so much to the project, including Director of Photography, Julio Costantini who has a great resume and just finished film school in Cuba.

So Sunday, May 31st we shoot all day at The Irish Pub in Lapa, if you want to be an Extra come by at 7:30AM… I’ll be there at 6, cafe and smokes in hand… sempre o mesos.

               À direita, LEO, em torno de 30 anos, também branco, cabelos
               castanhos, pele bronzeada, um ar tranquilo. Sua expressão

               Isabel, de rabo de cavalo, olha o cardápio bem concentrada.

               A chegada de uma tempestade tinge a mesa com uma coloração
               azul-escura, em meio aos freqüentadores do point da redondeza
               durante o horário do almoço.

               LEO a observa com um olhar carinhoso, tranqüilo.

               ISABEL olha para ele com ódio.

                         Vai pedir o quê?

                                   ISABEL
                             (incomodada)
                         Não sei.

               A GARçONETE se aproxima, vinte e poucos anos, bonitinha e
               alegre.

                                   GARÇONETE

                                   ISABEL
                             (seca)
                         Não sei.

                                   LEO
                         Pra mim, o filé à Oswaldo Aranha,
                         ao ponto. E um chope, por favor.

               Isabel lança um olhar frustrado - e já conhecido - para Leo.

                                   ISABEL
                         Sempre o mesmo.

                                   LEO
                         Eu sei o que eu quero.

               A Garçonete dá uma olhada solidária para Leo e bruscamente
               pergunta a Isabel

                                   GARÇONETE
                         E você?

                                   ISABEL
                         Acho que eu quero o salpicão de
                         frango, mas com pouca maionese, bem
                         sequinho. Ah, e traz a batata palha
                         separada.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         E pra beber?

                                   ISABEL
                         Por enquanto nada.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         Obrigada.

               A Garçonete pega os cardápios e vai embora.

               Isabel dá uma olhada para Leo, que sorri tristemente e
               balança a cabeça.

                                   LEO
                         Que dia é hoje mesmo?

               Isabel estremece, mas prefere ignorá-lo.

               INT. DO RESTAURANTE - OUTRO DIA

               TÍTULO: Semana 2

               Isabel olha para o cardápio, encurvada, cansada e
               despenteada.

               Uma luz vermelho-escura aquece a mesa, em meio aos
               freqüentadores do almoço, e os funcionários se movimentam
               lentamente pelo salão.

               Leo a observa com um olhar cansado.

               Isabel o ignora por um instante.

                                   LEO
                             (desinteressado)
                         Vai pedir o quê?

                                   ISABEL
                             (choramingando)
                         Não sei.

               A garçonete se aproxima, vinte e poucos anos, bonitinha e
               fria.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         O que vocês vão querer hoje?

                                   ISABEL
                             (derrotada)
                         Não sei.

                                   LEO
                         Pra mim, o filé à Oswaldo Aranha,
                         ao ponto. E um chope, por favor.

               Isabel olha para Leo em busca de ajuda, mas ele dá de ombros.

                                   ISABEL
                         Sempre o mesmo.

                                   LEO
                         Eu sei o que eu quero.

               A garçonete lança um olhar profundo para Leo e se volta
               impaciente para Isabel.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         E você?

                                   ISABEL
                         Acho que eu quero picanha com
                         batata-frita. Mais pra mal-passada.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         E pra beber?

                                   ISABEL
                         Uma coca com bastante gelo.

               Isabel fixa o olhar vazio na mesa e Leo está entediado.

               Leo a ignora.

               TÍTULO: Semana 3

               Isabel olha o cardápio. Está vibrante, com o olhar alegre,
               tocando os lábios e brincando com seu cabelo.

               Uma luz esverdeada e brilhante ilumina a mesa, em meio aos
               freqüentadores do almoço, e os funcionários se movimentam
               rapidamente pelo salão.

               Leo a ignora e fica olhando ao redor.

               Isabel  presta atenção às palavras dele, ansiosa para se
               divertir.

                                   LEO
                         Vai pedir o quê?

                                   ISABEL
                             (brincalhona)
                         Não sei.

               A garçonete se aproxima, vinte e poucos anos, bonitinha e
               cansada

                                   GARÇONETE
                         O que vocês vão querer hoje?

                                   ISABEL
                         Não sei.

                                   LEO
                         Pra mim, o filé à Oswaldo Aranha,
                         ao ponto. E um chope, por favor.

               Isabel olha para Leo com admiração, que ele interpreta
               erradamente como uma satisfação condescendente.

               inexpressiva para Isabel.

               Isabel olha o cardápio contente e de mãos dadas com Leo, que
               não consegue tirar os olhos dela.

               Uma luz amarelada calorosa ilumina a mesa, em meio aos
               freqüentadores do almoço, e os funcionários se movimentam com
               fluidez pelo salão.

               Isabel sorri agradecida.

                                   LEO
                         Vai pedir o quê?

                                   ISABEL
                         Não sei.

               A garçonete se aproxima, vinte e poucos anos, bonitinha e
               animada.

                                   GARÇONETE
                         O que vocês vão querer hoje?

                                   ISABEL
                         Não sei.

                         Pra mim, o filé à Oswaldo Aranha,

               Isabel olha empolgada para ele.

Re-Writing in Rio

It’s been over 3 months in Rio and things feel right. I took a lot longer then planned to finish a re-write of Brazil Run, and I hope it’s a big improvement. I tried to cut down on the action, and make Act 2’s focus more about character defining incidents, hopefully it makes a compelling read.

I’ve also started a small English language local Rio news company here - The Gringo Times - which has been fun and rewarding. Not sure if it’ll be financially successful, but it keeps my mind moving and hopefully it will help me spend more time here, ’cause i like it.

Well enough about me, I’ll run to take a run on the praia agora.
